What does offsetting carbon emissions mean?
It means we measure the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere as a result of delivering your parcel as well as those associated with manufacturing the packaging used to send it in. We then invest in verified projects that reduce carbon emissions by that same amount.
How does it work?
We complete an annual carbon assessment, conducted by qualified environmental consultants, which measures all of the carbon emissions associated with operating our business. As well as measuring the emissions from the energy used to power our DCs, stores, and offices, the fuel used to run our company vehicles, all types of company travel and accommodation, shipping products to and from our stores and transporting schuh products to the UK, we also include the emissions for delivering parcels direct to customers (delivery of your order).
The result is a carbon footprint expressed as a number, in tonnes, or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). We measure and report on our footprint each year, find ways to reduce it and offset any balance to become a ‘carbon neutral’ organisation. In addition, we measure the emissions released from making and recycling our mail bags and offset these in a similar way. The offsetting projects chosen can include renewable energy generation, improving energy efficiency, reducing deforestation and planting more trees. This year we have chosen to fund a wind energy project in India.
What else are we doing?
In addition to measuring, reducing and offsetting our carbon footprint we are actively looking for other ways to play our part in helping preserve the environment for current and future generations. We have made a small start by conserving energy, reducing and recycling waste as well as sourcing sustainable goods and services wherever possible. There’s still a long way to go but we are committed to learning and getting better.
